LEWISBURG, PA – Bison women’s basketball welcomed its newest recruits as first-year head coach Aaron Roussell announced its Class of 2017 on Monday. Claire DeBoer, Alex Henning, Megan McGurk and Suné Swart are all slated to make their Bucknell debuts in 2013-14.
“We are very excited about our first recruiting class,” said Roussell. “Our staff, led by Coach Christian Stefanopolous, worked very hard and we are more than satisfied with the haul we pulled in. This is a balanced class from a position standpoint, and all will have very good chance at contributing from the time they arrive in Lewisburg. They are a talented bunch, but it is their work ethic and competitive drive that stood out during the recruiting process. This is something we paid a lot of attention to during this process and we are confident they will add to the change in culture we are working toward.”
Bucknell claimed its first victory of the 2012-13 season on Saturday, defeating Canisius 59-50 on the road. The Bison are now 1-2 on the year and will host Niagara at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Sojka Pavilion.

Coach Roussell on DeBoer: “I recruited one of her high school teammates to the University of Chicago so I have been watching and recruiting Claire for a long time; I am thrilled to now be at a place where we could actually get her. She plays incredibly hard and will be a treat for Bison fans to watch. She is a very good low-post scorer, but I also watched her hit three 3-pointers in last year’s state championship game, which will give us some nice versatility at that spot.”
Alex Henning – Centreville, Ohio/Centreville – named Dayton Daily News All-Area First Team … All-Southwest District Second Team honoree … cited to GWOC First Team and was All-State Special Mention … member of OHSBCA Scholarship Society … born Jan. 5, 1995 in Dayton, Ohio … daughter of Terry and Donna Henning … has a sister, Christine.
Coach Roussell on Henning: “Alex is a true competitor with a real knack to score. She has put up a lot of points at the high school level but also is a well-rounded player that will be very dangerous in our transition game. She will play mostly at the wing for us, but her skill set will allow her to play multiple positions and be a tough cover for opponents.”
Megan McGurk – Philadelphia, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame – lettered four years in basketball and lacrosse at Academy of Notre Dame … also lettered twice in soccer … captained basketball team as a senior … named All-State Second Team in basketball as a sophomore and junior … also named All-Inter AC First Team as a sophomore and junior and Second Team as a freshman … received All-DELCO First Team honors as a sophomore and junior and Second Team honors as a freshman …. named All-Mainline freshman through junior seasons … born July 31, 1994 in Philadelphia, Pa. … daughter of Christopher and Kathleen McGurk … has two brothers, Michael and Matthew, and a sister, Amanda.
Coach Roussell on McGurk: “We started recruiting Megan the second we got the job here. We targeted her as the point guard we wanted from day one and our staff is excited to have her aboard. She encompasses everything a true point guard should possess and we feel fortunate that we able to get her here over some bigger schools.”
Suné Swart – Franklin, Pa./Cranberry Area (N.J.) – Lettered in soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball … captained volleyball and basketball squads … named Third Team KSAL All-Star in basketball in 2012 … also named Second Team District 9 All-Star … member of team that won the KSAL and District 9 championships in 2011-12 … team advanced to PIAA State Championship Elite Eight in 2011-12 … MVP of 2011 Christmas Tournament … averaged a double-double as a junior … member of softball team that won KSAL and District 9 championships in 2012 … born May 12, 1995 in Cape Town, South Africa … daughter of Jannie and Mari swart … has a brother, Janco.
Coach Roussell on Swart: “We felt very fortunate to land Suné very late in the recruiting process. She has tremendous upside having only taken up the game a few years ago when she moved from South Africa. Her size will bring us some much needed help in the post next year, but it is her athleticism that we are most excited about.”
