WOMENS SOCCER:
WEST CHESTER, PA – The Mercyhurst women’s soccer team was blanked by the West Chester Rams 2-0 for its first loss of the season on Saturday.
The Lakers started strong by controlling possession and getting the first scoring opportunities of the game, including a couple of corner kicks and shots on goal in the first nine minutes.
After that, momentum shifted to West Chester, who registered the next four shots, including the game’s first goal late in the 24th minute. Scarlett Walsh’s pass found Kara Pavell for her first goal of the season to put the Rams up 1-0.
The Rams outshot the Lakers 20-3 for the entire game, also holding a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. While the Lakers weren’t getting shots on goal in the second half, they managed to hang around and earned a couple of corner kick opportunities late in 88th and 89th minutes.
The second corner opportunity for Mercyhurst would soon turn the other way, as Linzi Wolfe managed to breakaway around midfield and scoring in transition to make it 2-0 just before the game’s end.
Mercyhurst (2-1-0, 2-1-0) will be back on the pitch tomorrow, Sept. 10 at Bloomsburg for a 3:30 start.
MENS SOCCER:
WEST CHESTER, PA – The Mercyhurst men’s soccer team started strong but ended up dropping its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game of the season 2-1 in overtime to the West Chester Rams.
The Lakers were first on the board 15 minutes into the game when senior forward Thom Derks scored his second goal of the season.
The score stalled at 1-0 until late in the second half. West Chester finally broke through to tie the game in the 78th minutes courtesy of Max Adarkwah’s first of the season on an assist from Andrew Slater.
The game went to overtime with the first half of the extra period ending scoreless. In the second 15-minute period, the Rams scored the golden goal from Brett Miller to defeat the Lakers 2-1.
Mercyhurst (1-2-0, 0-1-0) will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 10, when the Lakers travel to Bloomsburg for a 1:00 p.m. start.
