WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Lycoming College senior Jason Mifsud (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) has earned three All-Commonwealth Conference honors during his career, helping him enter the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships as one of the top players in the top flight of singles play when play starts at the tournament at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Mifsud will begin the two-day tournament looking to become the first player in the last 30 years to reach 35 career singles wins, as he improved to 34-11 in his career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Misericordia’s Sal Saraniti on Thursday, Oct. 11. He is 4-1 this season and advanced to the semifinals of the B2 singles flight at the ITA Southeast Regionals.
Mifsud is a two-time finalist at the MAC Individuals, reaching the third flight finals in both the spring and fall of 2010. He also reached the quarterfinals at the event in 2011 in the top flight of singles play. No Lycoming player has ever won a flight at the tournament.
Along with Mifsud, fellow senior Cody Heffner (Williamsport, Pa./Muncy) will play in the second flight of singles. Heffner has posted a 26-16 singles record in his career and also added a singles win in the B6 flight at the ITA Southeast Regionals.
Sophomore Sean Marshall (Waverly, N.Y./Athens Area) will play in the third flight. He won a first-round match in the fourth flight in 2011, reaching the quarterfinals, and he enters the tournament with a 1-1 singles record.
Freshman Anthony Fabiano (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville Area), who posted his first career win against Misericordia on Thursday, Oct. 11, will play at No. 4 and juniors Jordan Dubinsky (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and Jack Port (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) will round out the singles lineup for the Warriors.
In doubles play, Mifsud and Marshall will play in the top flight. The two have not played together collegiately, but did compete together during summer tournaments.
Heffner will pair with freshman Jelani Martinez (Spring Hill, Fla./New York Military Institute) in the second flight and Dubinsky and Fabiano, who won their first match together against Misericordia, will round out the lineup in the third flight.
The first day of play will consist of two rounds of singles and doubles play before the tournament concludes on Sunday, Oct. 14, with the semifinals and finals of each flight of play.
