JAMESTOWN, NY – A three run first inning put the Jamestown Jammers in a hole that they just couldn’t dig out of Thursday night at Diethrick Park. The Chillicothe Paints would ride the big first inning to an eventual 3-2 victory.
Chillicothe got on the board off Jamestown starter Cam Knott (Mercyhurst University) in the first, via a 2-run triple from Chad Roberts, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hunter Prince.
The Jammers got one back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout from designated hitter Austin Alonge (Mercyhurst University).
Curtis Olvey (Kent State University) and the Jammers would creep a little closer in the bottom of the third inning, when Olvey would crush an RBI double off the left field wall at Diethrick Park to draw within 3-2. Unfortunately, the Jammers couldn’t muster up enough offense to allow the tying run to cross the plate for the remainder of the game.
The Jammers had their chances throughout the contest, but stranded multiple runners on base on several occasions.
Knott settled down after the shaky first inning, and threw wonderfully for the Jammers for the remainder of his start. He would end up working 6 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits, surrendering the three first inning runs, and striking out six. Jordan Toney (Pfeiffer University) would pitch the remaining 2 1/3 innings for the Jammers, and managed not to give up any hits or runs, and struck out one.
On the offensive side for the Jammers, catcher Jalen Washington (Ohio State University) collected two hits. Shortstop Eric Solberg (University of Wisconsin Milwaukee), Olvey, center fielder Dominque Jackson (Spartansburg Methodist College), first baseman Nick Vehlewald (Cal State Bakersfield), and left fielder Okevius Conway (Spartansburg Methodist College) each picked up one hit for the Jammers.
The Jammers now sit at 13-6 on the season, and still remain in first place in the East Division of the Prospect League.
The Jammers and Paints will end their two game series tomorrow night at Diethrick Park at 7:05pm. It will also be the conclusion of the Jammers “State Fair” home stand, which will end with a bang with a fireworks extravaganza after the game!
